Model 10517 Regular Wirestripping Handpiece

User Information and Instruction Sheet
Summary: Resistance heat is obtained by passing a safe, low voltage, high amperage current through a resistive alloy. As with all Resistance Wire-Stripping Handpieces, heat is generated local to the elements. Current is present for only so long as power is being applied to the Handpiece. The closed loop elements provide a path for the current from the Power Unit, through the Handpiece and back to the Power Unit.
Description: Regular Tweezer Thermal Wirestripping Handpiece. This handpiece is supplied with two Nickel-Chromium Elements for stripping insulation from wire. It is equipped with a four-foot (1.22 m) neoprene cable (14-2 HPN) with taper pin quick connect terminals for connecting to American Beauty® Power Unit (push in turning clockwise until snug) and padded handles for operator comfort. This Handpieces uses Resistance Wire Elements to create heat in order to soften or melt through the outer jacket of the wire to be stripped.
  • This Handpiece should not be operated above 100 watts.
  • Maximum wattage that is shown reflects a 20-second maximum allowable heating duration. For shorter heating durations, higher wattages may be allowable.
Uses: This American Beauty® Thermal Wirestrippers were developed to remove insulation from #14 gauge and finer wire. This Wirestripper can successfully and cleanly remove insulation from low-temperature PVC up to and including high-temperature fluorocarbon types (PVC will require low heat settings - just to soften but not burn). Since heat is the essence to softening and parting the insulating material, time required to strip wire will vary with the type and thickness of the jacket, as well as the conductor size. Any shielding under the jacket will slow the softening time, but most insulation will strip cleanly without fraying, given time. Proper stripping method is to heat, twist and pull gently to remove the insulation.

Please reference the General Operating Instructions for American Beauty® Resistance Soldering Systems for more detailed operating instructions and guidelines.

Recommended Power Units: This handpiece may be used with the following American Beauty® power units: Model 105A3 & Model 105A3T (Both 100 Watts).
NOTE: It is always a good idea to start out at the lowest setting on the power unit when using this Handpiece. The use of a Footswitch (Model
10519) for ease of heating time adjustment and control is highly recommended.
Replacement Electrodes/Elements:
  • Model 10545 metal elements (round cross section, 1 notched)(Pkg. of 2)
  • Model 10529 metal elements (both flattened, 1 notched)(Pkg. of 2)
  • Model 10520 metal elements (both flattened and notched)(Pkg. of 2)

NOTE: Always keep elements clean and free from burnt flux and solder residue by cleaning them with an emery cloth, a fine file or a small wire brush.

WARNING: ELECTRODES GENERATE A SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT OF HEAT WHEN POWER IS APPLIED. USE WITH CAUTION TO AVOID BURNS, FIRE OR OTHER POTENTIAL DAMAGE. DO NOT OPERATE NEAR COMBUSTABLE MATERIALS. NORMAL USE OF THIS PRODUCT IS LIKELY TO EXPOSE THE USER TO SOLDERS CONTAINING LEAD, WHICH IS KNOWN TO THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA TO CAUSE CANCER AND BIRTH DEFECTS (OR OTHER REPRODUCTIVE HARM) OR OTHER PROPOSITION 65 LISTED CHEMICALS.
